30 Court St.
Feb. 12. 1853
Dear Sir,
Allow me to ask your special attention
to my friend, Mr. George W. Peck, who goes out in four
[weeks ?] Plymouth Rock, to Australia.
Mr. Peck is a member of
the Bar of Boston, a graduate of Brown University,
a man of unusual talents, & a valued & distinguished
contributor to the Reviews & Journals, the personal
friend of many of our most distinguished authors.
His only failing I mentioned to you. He makes
this voyage in the hope of overcoming this, & of regaining
his self-control. He is an honorable & trust-worthy
man, & one who has, I assure you, a great many friends
& well-wishers.
If, when he arrives out, anything
can be found for him to do in your counting-room, or
if you can procure him an opportunity to do anything,
it will be a kindness to him & to his friends.
I shall place in your hands the little
money he has, subject to his order, which I hope you
will dispense to him under some oversight, & with
advice.
Believe me, with great respect,
Your obea't servt
R.H.Dana Jr
